The newly opened Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts -- designed by Diamond + Schmitt Architects -- is a gleaming structure housing performances of the Toronto Opera.
The design features compelling elements throughout, from the dramatic glass staircase that spans three stories, to the open, five-story City Room in which opera-lovers can gather before and after the show.
At night, the effect is magical. Passersby can peer into the softly glowing space and see the bustle of activity throughout. From the inside, theatergoers get spectacular city views.
During the day, though, the huge expanse of glass becomes potentially overpowering, something any glass-heavy building must deal with. For this building, architects specified an external shading system by Nysan Solar Control, a Hunter Douglas Company.
