Prominent, curving lines shoot up to the sky ? starkly contrasting the right-angled metropolis that is America?s beloved Windy City. The lines belong to two forward-looking, upward-stretching buildings. Together, 111 South Wacker and the Hyatt Center form what Chicago Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin called the ?Gateway to the Loop.?

But these buildings share so much more than their location. Both are office buildings that feature expansive column-free floor plans and friendly lease spans. Both adorn their legions of windows with aluminum blinds by Hunter Douglas. And, most importantly ? and impressively ? both meet Chicago?s aggressive green standards and energy code.

One half of the gateway, 111 South Wacker, defines modern efficiency. Designed by Goettsch Partners for The John Buck Company, the building opens up to the street with a dramatic, cylindrical lobby while saluting the
